Pie & Whiskey at Get Lit
For seven years, Pie & Whiskey has been part of Spokane’s literary festival Get Lit! The event is hosted by writers Samuel Ligon and Kate Lebo, and features readings of flash fiction, flash nonfiction, and poetry inspired by everyone’s favorite food and drink.
Pies served at the event are baked by Kate Lebo, with help from other heroic pie bakers of Spokane. Christine Holbert of Lost Horse Press designs a chapbook featuring the pieces written for Pie & Whiskey, which is printed by Gray Dog Press and hand-stitched by EWU students. Sales of the book help support the event. Donations are also gladly accepted. Whiskey is generously donated by Spokane’s delicious and award-winning Dry Fly Distilling.

Pie & Whiskey is back live in Spokane after 17 years in the COVID wilderness, and we’ll be fueled by pie, yes, and whiskey, of course, but also the inspirational musings of Shirley Temple — “I wanted to be in the FBI. I also wanted to be a pie salesman;” and Carrie Nation — “No man who drank or smoked could ever come nearer to me than the telephone. I’d say, I won’t let you — you nicotine-soaked, beer-besmeared, whiskey-greased, red-eyed devil — talk to me face to face.” And while we won’t be beer besmeared, we might get slightly whiskey-greased and certainly pie undone, as we surrender to the short, pithy, unbearably true and beautiful readings of:
